the look

Playful, practical and designed for the whole family.

This playroom starts with a simple idea: a children's space doesn't have to look childish.

A cream sofa with a fine blue gingham creates a calm foundation, while the low ochre chair and textured mustard rug bring warmth and colour into the room. Rather than relying on traditional children's furniture, the larger pieces have been chosen to feel at home anywhere in the house.

Storage does the practical work. The natural oak shelving provides space for toys, books and baskets, while the deep blue cabinet keeps everyday clutter contained and introduces a stronger block of colour.

Playful details come through in smaller doses — from the scribbled artwork and bird cushion to the sculptural red lighting and checkerboard bean bag. A child-sized table and chairs gives little ones their own place to draw, build and play without dominating the room.

The result is a playroom that feels fun without feeling chaotic — grown-up enough for the rest of the house, but still very much a space for children.

The Palette

Keep the foundation calm, then make the colour playful.

Warm neutrals and natural timber create the quieter backdrop, while mustard, blue and small hits of burgundy give the room its character.

  • 55% Warm Neutrals

Cream, natural oak and soft oatmeal keep the larger pieces light and give the stronger colours plenty of breathing room.

  • 30% Mustard & ochre

Golden yellow and ochre bring warmth through the rug and seating, making the room feel cheerful without relying on bright primary colours.

  • 20% Blue & Burgandy

Deep blue adds structure through the storage and finer details, while small touches of burgundy introduce contrast and stop the palette feeling too predictable.

  • 01 Choose Furniture That Can Grow With Them

Use grown-up pieces for the expensive furniture and let toys and accessories provide the child-friendly layer. A good sofa, armchair or shelving unit can stay long after the playroom changes purpose.

  • 02 Make Storage Part of the Design

Mix open and closed storage so favourite toys can stay accessible while visual clutter can disappear. Baskets make everyday tidying easier without filling the room with plastic boxes.

  • 03 Bring The Fun Through Pattern

Checks, stripes and playful artwork give the room energy without needing a theme. Keeping the patterns within a considered colour palette stops them competing with one another.

  • 04 Give Children Their Own Zone

A small table and chairs creates a dedicated place for drawing, building and making, while leaving the main seating area comfortable enough for the whole family to use.
