the look

Earthy, graphic and confidently layered.

This living room starts with deep brown as its anchor, using the sofa to give the scheme warmth and depth without making the room feel heavy.

Olive brings in the second key colour through the checked chair, footstool, cushion and textiles. Rather than matching everything exactly, different scales of pattern are layered together — from the larger checkerboard rug to the finer check on the chair and smaller geometric details.

A glossy brown side table introduces a completely different finish, breaking up the softer upholstery and woven textures, while the sculptural lighting keeps the room feeling contemporary.

The artwork adds the unexpected note, bringing in softer blue and yellow alongside the deeper earthy tones and stopping the palette from becoming too predictable.

The result is warm, characterful and considered - with plenty of pattern and personality, without the designer price tag.

The Palette

Start with brown, then soften it with green and blue.

Deep brown gives the room its depth, while olive and soft pea green bring in an earthy freshness. Pale blue lifts the scheme and warm beige keeps everything grounded.

  • 45% Brown

Deep brown anchors the room through the sofa and smaller darker details.

  • 30% Green

Dark olive and softer pea green bring contrast without making the palette feel bright.

  • 25% Light Neutrals & Blue

Warm beige and pale blue keep the room balanced and stop the darker colours from feeling heavy.

Five muted color circles in a row on a light cream background: beige, pale blue, olive green, dark green, and dark brown.
  • 01 Start with a strong neutral

Brown works almost like a neutral here, giving the room depth without dictating every other colour. Use it on one substantial piece, then build around it.

  • 02 Repeat pattern at different scales

Checks appear throughout the room, but they aren't identical. Mixing larger and smaller patterns creates repetition without making the scheme feel overly coordinated.

  • 03 Mix your finishes

Soft upholstery and woven texture are balanced with something glossy and sculptural. The brown side table gives the room just enough shine and contrast.

  • 04 Add a Cooler Note

A small amount of pale blue in the artwork cuts through the warmer brown and green tones and keeps the palette feeling fresh.
